Sundays are usually really laid back at the shop. If you think I hate being at the shop on Saturdays, then you don't even want to know about Sundays. Sundays are reserved for brunch and pointing at people and making fun of them (j/k... maybe). Either way, yesterday was unusually good as I was paid a visit by Mr. Aaron Von Minden and Ms. Kim Wu. Aaron dropped off his shirts (look below for the post) and his fucking rad 1930 Ford Coupe. We caught up with what's been going on in our respective hectic schedules.
Kim is a good friend of mine and is currently in her junior/senior year at Art Center, studying Transportation Design. With completed internships at Designworks and Volkswagen USA, she has become a force to be reckoned with in the car design community, not only for her designs but her awesome visual communication skills. Being that the car design community is 95% male dominated, it's a testament to Kim and her skills. No wonder she's a So-So....
Aaron works as the painter and builder at Designworks USA (which is basically BMW USA), overseeing many of the concept models that come out of that studio-- automotive and product design wise. Not only that, he has a shop that puts out some of the raddest hot rods in Socal, Savage Speed Garage. If you want to feel like you aren't doing much with your life, you just need to talk with Aaron. After a long work day at Designworks, he treks it over to his personal shop in the evening to bang out some hot rods. Couple that with the fact that he is a member of one of the most well-known car clubs, THEM!, and you have yourself one busy, busy guy. Aaron is also a dick, in that he just picked himself up TWO new project cars that anyone would kill for-- a 1949 Mercury "Lead Sled" and a 1934 Ford 5 window coupe... Bastard.... Below you'll find some teaser pics of the his upcoming projects and his '30 Coupe thats in the shop as we speak.....

Believe it or not, Mr. Von Minden used to sell his shirts over at a certain shop on Melrose, named after a really famous pinstriper, BEFORE they became the ALL the rage on TMZ.COM. That's right, his shirts used to FLY out of the Von Dutch Store, when they carried other brands and builders' wares, before they became all frou-frou and GHEY (thats the new way to spell it to show that it is REALLY gay)... So yesterday my business partner and long time friend, Daniel, rolled into the shop with a whole new look. He finally mounted his wheels, off his 350z, onto his daily transport-- a '98 Infiniti Q45. What's really crazy about it is that the wheels are fuggen ginormous! As stated before, the wheels, being that they were meant for a 350z which has huge fender flares, are sized pretty aggressively (width and offset), so the fact that they even fit in the tiny wheelwells of the Q45 is mind-blowing.

A bit of a history lesson: The look and style of a modern day, upper class japanese sedan sitting on the ground with huge wheels, aero kit and bare minimum fitment, is called V.I.P. in Japan, or pronounced (with japanese accent) "Bee-Pu". The cars are usually a higher end, luxurious sedan with aero kits ranging from the extravagant to the subtle, sitting on huge wheels with massive polished lips in the rear. Now don't get this mixed up with no DUB shit. That shit is NOT cool, unless you're some rapper or athlete, which then is totally EXPECTED and pretty much LAME and cliche. The kicker of this is that it is a look that was popularized by the Yakuza, or the Japanese Mafia. Being that most of what the Yakuza represent in Japan is looked at as absurd and generally bad (the actual term "Yakuza" comes from a Japanese card game, called Oicho-Kabu and means "good for nothing"), the V.I.P. look has a certain appeal to it.

Although the yakuza often insist on their origins as Japanese "Robin Hoods" and protectors, some scholars trace their beginnings to the kabukimono (raving ones), also known as hatamoto yakko (servants of the shogun). These groups of rōnin (masterless samurai) adopted strange hair styles, dressed in an outrageous manner, spoke in vulgar and specialized slang, carried unusually long swords and harassed ordinary people. And the same can generally be said for modern day Yakuza. From the slicked back hair, to the full body suit tattoos, the cars speak the same extravagant language that is associated with their history and overall look.

At first it wasn't going to happen. Not enough time. People weren't ready. But in the end, Speak Easy v.2 DID happen and it went off without a hitch. Obviously, downtown San Diego is a buzz during the weekend hosting the ASR/Agenda conventions, with after parties galore and business being handled at every which corner. But behind the frosted glass on 9th St. is where it was at-- well at least for us. Congrats to everyone involved and Thank Yous are in order to everyone that came by and/or helped. Me being the dumbass that I am, only took pics on the last day, as I was way too preoccupied with dicking around the first two days of the show (Sales? What's that??). Good times for everyone. So after multiple PBR's and Sapporo's and dicking around, stomachs were definitely NOT happy. We trekked it down a couple of blocks to Basic, where quite possibly, I had, hands down, the best pizza I've ever had in my life! Although, there aren't pics, and it may sound funny, but mashed potato pizza is only the best thing ever! If you're in the area, definitely try to make it over to Basic on the corner of 10th and J street and thank me later. But enough about food-- we'll leave that one to Rickey. It was all about the after party and everyone that was able to tough it out the whole ASR/Agenda weekend, made it out in full force. The place got packed pretty quick and entrance to the venue bottle-necked as presumed. Even the pre-requisite drunk altercation took place later in the evening. Nothing caps off an event like a drunken mishap. Now onto the party pics!

There's no place like home-- Downtown LA to be exact. I absolutely love it. Been living there for about 10 years now and there's no other place I'd rather be. That is unless you happen to mention San Diego. Dunno if there's something in the air or the water, but it's an awesome place to be along with some rad friends. Saturday started off beautifully. It wasn't too hot and the sun was glowing around Los Angeles-- Fairfax Boulevard to be exact. It set the tone for what was to be an awesome event filled with good people. Mr. Sal Barbier kicked off his shop, SLB, with a block party on Rosewood, complete with rad cars, bikes, beer and a mariachi band! Live striping by Mr. Lyle Fisk was handled outside right by the onsite mexican food stand. You couldn't get more Southern California Kulture if you tried.

Man... the new year is finally upon us. Seemed just like yesterday that I was ringing in '06 and making resolutions that I knew were going to be broken the next day. Well, it is officially '07 and it is time to ring it in right!

The week before "Taillights and Tire Smoke", I got a call from Sal, asking when my show was. To my dismay, he told me that he had scheduled his grand opening show the same day! Well, Sal being the rad guy that he is, postponed his grand opening, as to not coincide with my show, which I thought was such an awesome gesture. Now the time has come around for Mr. Barbier's Grand Opening of SLB23. Check the flyer...

Just check out the event: live pinstriping by world renowned artist Lyle Fisk, custom bikes and cars, art by some of the best artists and stripers to ever do it and a LIVE MARIACHI BAND! You read that right-- a live fucken mariachi band! Can it get any better? I think not. Leave it to Sal to cook up an event so rad! In the 1940's, there was a teenager by the name of Dean Moon who grew up in Southern California. His passion was all things cars and racing. His parents owned a small cafe in Santa Fe Springs, Ca. called "Moon Cafe", where in the back was a small garage that actually birthed, to what is arguably, the most famous company in all of hot-rodding. If you consider yourself a car person and don't, at least, recognize the infamous Moon logo-- you should go back, do some history research, and reconsider your standing as a "car guy." Once the company had been established, soon after Moon was bought up by a very smart japanese businessman (i have his name and info here somewhere). Today, you can find various Moon locations throughout Japan, along with the original Mooneyes location in Santa Fe Springs, Ca. still intact-- and even a Moon Cafe (in Japan), similar to the original version that Dean Moon's parents owned. Beyond all things kustom for your car, their apparel line is one of the finest out there. The quality of cotton on their shirts are amazing (rather than the typical Triple A bs found in "streetwear") and the graphic quality is amazing.

The following is a SUPER truncated version of a time in history. Many details have been left out, so if you are further interested-- Google that shit....

My first memory of Len Higa was way back in the day when I was perusing through a Turbo Magazine and it was one of the first coverages of Hawaii's Fastest Street Car Shootout. If my memory serves me correct (its been through a lot!) Len was running low 11 sec quarter mile times in a "street-prepped" EG Civic. That was unheard of at the time, as the fastest "race-prepped" Honda (basically THE fastest Honda in the world) was running 10 sec times. I mean Len basically put on some slicks, at times put some "bogies" on the back, and straight ran his car and was keeping up with "The Fastest" Honda's in the world, that had a lot of track preparation to their cars-- one-piece front ends, back-halfed chassis's, FULL lexan glass all around. And here was Len with a streetcar that was able to keep up. That's a testament to Len and Jensen Oda's, who ran Hypersports Hawaii back in the day, capability to build one fast and reliable car. Len eventually went on to becoming THE fastest Honda in the world at the time, while keeping his streetcar status-- simply amazing.

While this was going on, Alyasha was doing Alphanumeric and had met Len through a mutual friend. That is what eventually led to Alphanumeric sponsoring Len's car and a long time friendship had begun. Fast forward years and Len is still a true gearhead. From helming his position as Head of Research and Development at Apex'i to building some THE raddest competition vehicles out (Sparco Evo, Apex'i Competition Drift FD, to numerous Skylines), he still finds time to fabricate, weld and build with the best of them. Not to mention that he gets out and DRIVES.

As a core part of the F.I.S.M. (Fuel Injected Suicide Machines) collective, Len has built a strong brand that reflects his interests and talents as a true gearhead, while keeping it fresh and unique in a sea of all-over print and pastel colors. One of the most genuine and awesome guys that I have had the opportunity to meet and know, Len never ceases to amaze. It is my pleasure to present to you O2 Motorworks.

After delaying for almost a week and being "out-blogged" by Aly, which is really bad in it's own right considering that he updates every other year, I've finally sat my ass down and sorted through a TON of photos, courtesy of Mr. Jay Canter, who so graciously covered the whole evening. This is just a fraction of the photos that were provided to me and I'm a lazy ass anyway, so its just a taste of how the evening went down. So after months of calculated planning, tight reconnaissance, and wining & dining of popular artists and movers and shakers we are finally ready to unveil whats been up our sleeves. Okay, okay,-- in all honesty, things were last minute and rushed, we still aren't finished with much, and said artists that are "tentatively" supposed to show work are still up in the air. The days and weeks are counting down and boy am I feeling the effects. I can't fully divulge the details to you as of yet, but in about a week, I can let you guys in on what's been brewing. But yesterday, I made the trek into the hills of Hollywood to visit Mr. Dov Kelemer of DKE Toys and picked up the lastest shipment for the shop. I nearly shat my pants when I got his email for the arrival of the Futura Nosferatu Pointmans. I've been waiting to get my hands on some for my personal collection, as well as for the shop, so needless to say that I was more than stoked when they were arriving on a super limited basis. Also just in with the smell of fresh vinyl, are the Anarchy 9" Nades by none other than Kozik. Only 350 versions of the black Nades were produced and 70 of the uber-limited edition white version.

16" Futura Nosferatu's-- The digital, beige camo version is a Futura original, while the SoFun version is the result of a collaboration between Futura and Eric So. It comes with a ceramic stand and only 400 pieces were made in each version. HEAT!

I first met Mr. Daniel Reyes (aka Danny Lovewright) at the F.I.S.M. private exhibition held at Aly's pad during ASR/Agenda weekend. We were fortunate enough to join in on the exhibition at the last minute, with an invitation from Mr. Moore. Needless to say we were totally stoked to be showing with these awesome brands that we had no excuse being next to... but that's a whole 'nother story-- neither here nor there. Besides these awesome "brands", were some absolutely awesome people that welcomed us with open arms into the golden glow that is San Diego. Danny Lovewright is one such awesome person, who I finally got to meet that weekend and we've been exchanging homo sexual tendencies ever since (its a shame, cuz Danny is married-- again, neither here nor there) over AIM. His line, The Lovewright Company, is really refreshing, as there really is nothing like it out there and is straight up my alley as well as Fast Eddie's. Look for some cool stuff from Danny and us that's coming in the near future. Now hurry and buy something.

In complete stark contrast to last week, the second Rebel 8 (www.rebel8.com) shipment arrived today on time and as promised, per the Fedex tracking status. Mr. What Up Doe was conspicuously absent today and I suspect that as the reason for the punctual delivery time and date. This time around, came the outerwear-- zip up hoodies and thermals! Once again more gangster-ass graphics from Mr. Giant-- perfect for your armed robberies of elder jewish ladies on Fairfax! We only have limited quantities of this run, so come and "cop" it! (God I hate that word)

What Up Doe?

So for the past two days, amidst everything else going on, I was in anticipation for the first part of the Rebel 8 shipment that was supposed to be coming in. The shipment was coming in through Fedex and after numerous online tracking number checks, I was denied for the first two days.

"In transit on delivery vehicle," it would state.

Okay,... no problem...give it some time. Monday- Nothing. Tueday- Nothing. Hell, after two days of this, it got a little annoying. How can something be "in transit" on the vehicle for two days when the los angeles Fedex building is damn near around the corner! Now I know Fedex is a freaken global company, so my microscopic corner of the globe really doesn't matter to them, but this is ridiculous! To make matters even better, the last time Fedex came and dropped something off, the driver was late beyond belief, stoned out of his mind, with super blood shot eyes and greeted me with a, "What up doe?" Awesome.

Nevertheless, today as I came into the shop, I was greeted with the Rebel 8 shipment waiting for me. I've been a fan of Mike Giant for some time, so to be able to carry his line in the shop is a good feeling. More heat from the Rebel 8 family with straight hand drawn graphics from none other than Mr. Giant himself. Now the only thing is, to try and get some ink done from the Mike! HA! On with the show kids....

So Nate (www.todieforclothing.com) was kind enough to pay us a visit and personally drop off the latest To Die For shipment all the way from the deep OC. If you haven't heard of To Die For, you might have seen the shirts on everyone's favorite tattoo artist, Chris Garver (www.truetattoo.net), on the show Miami Ink on TLC. Speaking with Nate, ever since that small cameo on the show, the response has been overwhelming and they sell out every run! The tattoo influence is quite apparent for this run as there are designs ranging from the ever popular ohni mask, of ancient japanese heritage, to the crouching tiger. Many of the designs have been collabo'ed or done by none other than Tim Hendricks (www.saltwatertattoo.com) himself! Congrats to Nate and the crew, as the line is looking awesome and much thanks for making the trek all the way out here to LA!
